Mermaids Urbane & Arcane Art Exhibition July 23rd - August 2nd
MERMAIDS: Urbane & Arcane
Explore fresh takes on an ancient archetype in a multimedia, multi-sensory group exhibition. New painted, photo,
print, performance, sculpted, and video art work inspired by mermaids will be exhibited from Valerie Kitchin, Victoria
Lockard, Jessie Lee Perry, and more. Guests are invited to stay for the post-reception party, where DJs will play
electronic dance music.
“Mermaids: Urbane & Arcane” is the creation of a group of Providence area friends wanting to support and
encourage each otherʼs creativity through a common project. Located at FireHouse 13, a Providence gallery and
performance venue located in an old firehouse, the interior will be transformed into a creative aquatic environment.
The opening reception will feature performance art duo Awesome Scienceʼs interactive exploration of the global,
the ancient, and the modern histories of mermaid mythology. Moira Brady and Brian Birch will present a short video
depicting the day in the life of a creature with human legs but the head of a fish. The reception will be catered with
fresh and local food. Fluid classical piano will be played by Danny Satori.
Valerie Kitchin is a photographer, experimental videographer and musician, and will exhibit her series of mermaid
figures, in and out of water. Victoria Lockard, first place winner at the Providence Art Clubʼs Fidelity 10th Annual
Juried Show, will present her series of linocuts and digital illustrations of mermaids. Jessie Lee Perry, a mixed
media artist, will exhibit her watercolor illustrations and refuse assemblage made into playful and topical mermaids.
Other invited artists include Chris Murphy and his octopus sculpture painstakingly constructed from smoked
banana peels and dental floss, and Portland, OR printmaker Heather McLaughinʼs “Hardcore Mermaid” coloring
books.
The musical event is headlined by DJ Christopher Wade, from the LoveLife collective, along with Tim Howe and
Danny Satori, all spinning various forms of house music with accompanying projected videography. The cover is $3
for guests arriving after the opening reception.
